For Bigs...

Service to Children

A-Z

We recruit, screen, and train qualified, dedicated and "child safe" Big Brothers, Big Sisters and volunteers to fulfill the needs of local area youth.
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • 46% less likely to use drugs
  • 33% less likely to hit someone
  • 27% less likely to use alcohol

Matches happen:

  • In communities between caring adults and children
  • In schools between high school juniors or seniors and nearby elementary school students.

Children can move seamlessly between our programs - even 'graduating' to becoming 'Bigs' themselves someday. Nothing can make you (or us) more proud.

If you're thinking about a Big Brother or Big Sister for your child, here are some facts about our program to help you decide.
  • The children we serve are between 6-16 years of age.
  • Our matches are same sex matches, girls are matched with Big Sisters and boys are matched with Big Brothers.
  • There is no fee for our services and there is no income requirement. We serve children from all walks of life.
  • Our volunteers, a.k.a. "Bigs" are over the age of 18.
  • Each of our volunteers has had a local police and national background investigation done prior to them being accepted into the program.
  • Our volunteers complete a screening, interview, and training process and provide us with 4 personal references that we check.
  • Our volunteers agree to spend a few hours a week with your child. They will pick your child up from your home. We encourage our volunteers to do activities with your child that do not cost anything. Our matches spend time together doing all kinds of things from riding bikes to baking cookies to tossing the football around. On occasion, our office does receive tickets to sporting events, movies and other community activities and we make these available to our Bigs to use with their Little.

How the process works...

  1. You (the parent or legal guardian) contact our office at 877-877-4057 to begin the application process. We will schedule you for an orientation.
  2. After your child has been accepted into the program, our Family Intake Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator will meet to try to find the best possible match for your child. Much of the information you provided at the interview will be used to match your child with a Big.
  3. One of our Match Coordinators will contact you to "present" the Big to you. They'll give you some information about the potential Big and you can decide whether or not you would like to come in to meet the potential Big.
  4. Once you've accepted a presented Big, you and your child will come into our office to meet the Big. You'll have the opportunity to talk to the Big one-on-one to help you feel completely at ease about the match. And so it goes...a match is made!
  5. The Match Coordinator will continue to monitor the match throughout the life of the match.
