Review by Jeff Newland, Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sisters
This book reaches out to those leaders among us who do not have a leadership 'position' and encourages them to learn to lead by 'disposition' from anywhere in an organization. I think it's a vital concept, and well handled in this book.
The author begins by addressing the many challenges to leading from the middle - focusing first on those challenges that reside within us, rather than in our environment. Leading from the middle requires the suspension of excuse making ('if only I were in charge, I could make a difference') and recognition of the many preconceived notions that tend to defeat our leadership actions before they even start.
The final portion of the book encourages and guilds the top leader of an organization to create a culture and environment where 360-degree leadership can flourish. I found this particularly reaffirming and instructional.
