Review by Jeff Newland, Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sisters
I read this book as a series of two reads into the topic of trust*.
I liked it primarily for it's stories of business success, failures and overall challenges. Bloomgarden is head of one of the worlds largest public relations firms, and has had the opportunity to watch business leaders close up. In this book she offers some truly informative stories about some of the most talked about business successes and failures of our time... oh, yeah... and 'trust' is involved. The reason I say that is because I sometimes felt as though what she really wanted to talk about were those interesting business stories... and then, remembering that the book was entitled "Trust," decided she better throw in a sentence like "and trust was a key factor." (Perhaps that's where she rightfully hands things over to someone like Stephen Covey who will undoubtedly do more to challenge the underpinnings of your concept, consideration and utilization of trust in all aspects of life.)
"Trust" (the book) is best suited for people, either, at the highest decision and policy making levels of an organization, or someone who has FULLY embraced their own 360 Degree Leader identity in their current role and wants to begin to wear the leadership clothes of their next role. For either, Bloomgarden offers thoughtful lessons in: the role of trust in leadership; socially responsible profitability; the power of the truth - even painful truth; trust's essential role in disaster recovery and major corporate culture change; and how to deal with critics and participate in public policy.
*The other book in my two-book foray into the topic of trust is Stephen R. M. Covey's "The Speed of Trust - the one thing that changes everything."
