Helping Children Reach Their Potential

A-Z

"I didn't think I could do this."
Big Dreams do come true
Fishing was always his favorite thing. Now, he's done it!
"That's gonna cost ya" she would say...
"Never, Never Give Up!" he cheered...

My Little Brother, Bryan and I like airplanes, so we decided to learn how to fly remote control planes together. We started out with two fairly inexpensive models and like two kids trying something new ignored all of the obvious bad flying conditions; like cramped spaces, buildings and wind.

the plane cart wheeled across Webster's Firemans' Field, strewing parts for several yards

Ready for our maiden flight on Webster's Firemans' Field, Bryan held my plane high above his head while I throttled the engine. We counted down to take off together and he released the plane with a smile. Free of his hand, my hands on the controls, my plane made an immediate left bank and cart wheeled across the field, strewing parts for several yards. While wondering to myself why my plane had reacted so oddly, I told Bryan that he would do better on his first try. He was reluctant and asked “What if I crash it?” I assured him that we would simply learn to rebuild the planes together and not to worry.

the wheels absorbed the shock and the plane bounced high into the air – but not before the batteries dropped out

Roles reversed, we again counted down to launch. Airborne, the plane climbed higher and higher into the sky, but headed toward a nearby pavilion, despite Bryan’s protests and attempts to steer it away. Unresponsive, the plane barreled into the roof. To my initial relief, the wheels absorbed the shock and the plane bounced high into the air – but not before the batteries dropped out and tumbled to the ground. “Did you see that, it was like I wasn’t even flying it?!” Bryan exclaimed, dismayed.

over the next two months, Bryan became an able flyer

As we looked at each other in confusion we heard a now familiar buzzing sound and turned around. It turned out that people on the hill behind us had the same type of plane, running off the same frequency. Our problems were the result of the two controllers battling to control our planes! Our planes were broken, but we felt better.
After crashing and rebuilding the planes a few times over the next two months, Bryan became an able flyer. After one such successful flight, looking back on all of our challenges and set backs, Bryan cheered “Never, Never Give Up!” He talked about it for weeks.
