As a part our shared committment to the children of community, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester recognizes that:
- Tobacco companies sell products that kill 430,000 Americans a year;
- Everyday 3,000 children begin using tobacco daily and that nearly 1,000 will die from emphysema, lung cancer, oral cancer, heart disease, and other tobacco-related diseases;
- Tobacco companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing campaigns targeting youth;
- Research has shown that many tobacco advertisements and tobacco industry tactics have a profound influence on children and may entice them to use these harmful products;
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester recognizes a responsibility to protect the health and safety of its staff, clients, and the community
Therefore, it is resolved that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester will not accept cash contributions, in-kind donations or any other form of contribution, from (1) any tobacco company, or (2) an entity (e.g. tobacco trade groups) whose purpose is to promote tobacco interests. |
