People will often ask me what the difference (if any) is between donating to Big Brothers Big Sisters directly or through United Way. The answer is Growth versus Stability - both of which we need.

Over many years, United Way support has been essential to our continued service to the community. We receive a set allocation of funding from the United Way each year. That amount far exceeds the amount attributable to specific donor designations. Therefore, regardless of whether someone designates us on their donation paperwork or not, we get the same amount per year from the United Way. For that reason, we suggest that you DO NOT designate us (or any other allocated agency). This causes needless transaction costs to the United Way. Instead, simply give to the United Way as part of your workplace initiative, and know we will get our portion, regardless.
